This is due to the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is an extremely common sexually transmitted infection that is especially prevalent in young adults.  HPV has long been known to cause cervical cancer and now studies suggest it also plays a role in more than 20% of oral cancer cases.  And what's more concerning is, few people even know they have HPV.

*A higher risk for oral cancer is present if you are a tobacco user of any age, or if you are over the age of 40, even if you are not a tobacco user.

*The highest risk for oral cancer is present if you have a personal history of oral cancer, or any other type of cancer, and even if you have a family history of cancer.

*If you are over the age of 40, and a tobacco user, you are in the highest risk group.
